Never underestimate the impact a movie or tv show can have on a young person’s worldview for a lifetime…
Forever slashing paintings, smashing windows, setting fire to post boxes, chaining themselves to railings, vandalizing golf courses, hiring out boats and sailing up the Thames shouting abuse at Parliament through loud-hailers, and throwing themselves under racehorses — they seemed to me to be the best girl gang in the world.
And at the end of their fun and games there wasn’t the long, lonely drop of the car going over the cliff or the bleak months in the juvenile correction centre.
No, there was the right to vote! Kicks AND justice!
When this country stood up — not for the last time — to German aggression, they threw themselves into the war effort of 1914-18 rather than sitting around whining about war being a male capitalist atrocity.
They recognised that many wars have to be fought to stop evil from triumphing. Which brings us neatly back to Islamist terrorism.
The greatest threat to peace, progress and pleasure since Hitler, Islamist extremists seek to overturn every gain the suffragettes strived and suffered so courageously for, and for this reason as much as any they must be resisted everywhere from Manhattan to Mumbai with every shred of strength we have.
The evil hand of extremism is attempting to turn back the clock on women’s rights all around the world. (…)
The suffragettes did not whine about men’s refusal to commit; or feel threatened by younger or prettier women; or complain there was TOO MUCH CHOICE; and they did not worry that their bums looked too big — in fact, they wore bustles to make them look bigger.
Next time any of us insult their memory by moaning we “can’t cope” with the choice/pressure/demands of the modern world, we should remember those brave women who fought for everything we now take for granted.
And anyone who isn’t humbled by this should have their vote taken away forthwith because, like children, criminals and lunatics, they don’t deserve it. End of!
